The Workaholic’s Wife: Greener Grass

This meme came up in my memories for today, and I thought it was a good reminder. 

Although my marriage is good today, there were days that I didn’t like my husband, days I wasn’t in love with him, and days I’m ashamed to say I treated strangers better than I treated him. I was selfish and placed my “needs” above others. I don’t think I was willing to suffer with him, but God allowed me to anyways. 

Now that we are “older” we have the mindset to “finish strong” in marriage, in faith, in life. Many of our friends are bored with marriage or say they have “grown apart” and give up on trying, so they divide the belongings and divorce. They think it’s what’s best for them, but they forget all the other lives this affects; children, grandchildren, friends, extended family.

I like this. Am I willing to “suffer with him”? I have worked side-by-side with Mark through hard things in life—through illnesses and hospitalizations, problems with kids (and parents!), family difficulties, financial problems, moves, accidents, questioning faith, changes in life directions, and the list goes on. Truth be told, I would rather suffer with him than with anyone else! 

I like the image that a friend shared years ago when a mutual friend was considering leaving her husband for another man, “The grass looks greener on the other side of the fence because someone is taking care of that lawn! If we take care of ours, our grass can be greener too!”

She said something else that always stuck with me, “Better the devil you know than the devil you don’t know.” We know our husbands’ struggles, faults, weaknesses and addictions. We don’t know all the evil and problems that comes along with a new relationship, and I promise, if you’re being tempted by someone outside your marriage, it will be evil—even if he proclaims to be a Christian...NO Christian would “go after” another man’s wife!

I didn’t intend on writing so much, sorry. Maybe someone needs to be reminded of this today? I hope it encourages you to focus on your husband and take care of your lawn, not because you want to please your husband but because you want to please God. He is the Author of change, and can make all things new, including making our marriages strong, joyful, fulfilling, and even fun!
